The Jersey Chamber Weekly Update
Dear Subscriber,
Here, there and everywhere…
First up, here. The Jersey Chamber of Commerce are saddened to hear the news that one of our members, the building contractor Mitchell Building Contractors, are appointing liquidators and ceasing trading with immediate effect. Our thoughts and best wishes go to all the customers, staff, suppliers and subcontractors that will be impacted by this decision.
This is the fourth major contractor in the past 18 months that have stopped trading in Jersey. Collectively, this presents a serious impact on the capacity of the local construction industry, and the disruption to the supply-chain should not be underestimated.
The Chamber message for 18 months has been consistent and called for our Government to get on with getting projects spade-in-the-ground ready.
A meeting today with our President, Chair of our Building Housing and Environment Committee & the Chief Minister should give us some clarity, but too late for valued Chamber member Mitchell Building Contractors.
There. Our man in Africa… Jersey Chamber Vice President Lee Madden, is busy extending the Chamber reach beyond our shores. Just this week he attended a UK/Kenya Trade Mission in Nairobi, as a panelist and delegate, at the invitation of the British Chamber of Commerce in Kenya.
Lee met with the Executive Committee, UK Deputy High Commissioner of Nairobi and the Kenyan government's permanent secretary of trade and investment. Such meetings successfully encourage positive collaboration between all involved, opening up links into East Africa for opportunities and trade to the mutual benefit of our members.
Everywhere. You'll notice that tickets for our next three Chamber lunches are available to buy. On Wednesday 9th October Sir Stephen Dalton will look at how we can improve the well-being and feel-good factor for employees and all islanders. He used to live up on St Saviour's hill you know… Some tickets are still available.
In November, the Comptroller & Auditor General will outline the value of having someone in place to keep a check on how we run the island.
And then in December, there might just be a seasonal lunch, with some fun and some discussion on the 'turkeys' throughout the year.
For those old enough to remember, in the words of Fred Pontin ''Book early!''
