The Jersey Chamber Weekly Update
Bonjour Dear Subscriber,
Rumours are buzzing around again about a French supermarket potentially opening in Jersey. It's an old story, but this week, I was discussing the same in a breakfast interview with the BBC, strengthened by the ED Minster (sorry Minister for Economic Sustainability) who said firmly, that he wasn't sure if this was true, but would check. For many, this is exciting – and I can understand why, however let us temper our expectations a bit. The BBC presenter fondly recalled the low prices in French supermarkets. Well, that's likely because she shopped in a large French supermarket, for French products in France! Let's break it down: - Premises Costs: Rental prices in France are over 20% lower than in the UK, so expect a significant difference when compared to Jersey.
- Grocery Prices: Interestingly, grocery prices in France are higher than in the UK. According to Numbeo, groceries in the UK are 16.9% cheaper than in France. So, sourcing from the UK might actually make some sense.
- Setup Costs: Setting up and operating a supermarket in Jersey is costly, with an approximately uplift of 27% compared to the UK. This means that a French or “discount” supermarket might not offer all the value we hope for.
- Freight Links: Current freight links are predominantly northbound and operate on a just-in-time basis. A southern route would require on-island warehousing and distribution, especially if there were only two ferries a week. (Anyway, where are we on that tender process?)
- Labelling: French supermarkets label their products in French, but by law, we need all food ingredients to be in English. This limits what existing players can import from France at the moment.
The ED Minister (Minister for Economic Sustainability) is eager to engage in more discussions to encourage a French supermarket in Jersey, aiming to provide competition and choice. This is great outreach, and nobody is shying away from competition, but a level playing field must be ensured. We can't have the government making more favourable trading rules or offering sites not available to existing businesses. We must remember that competition is only effective, when the market size is Economically Sustainable for those supplying the goods to stick around. Finally, the BBC presenter mused on how wonderful it would be to have baguettes, croissants, and Fruit de Mer available in Jersey. Well, super news for U, after some deep searching, I've discovered these goods are in Jersey, and even better than that, we also export oysters and moules to France by the tonne every week! Bon weekend

THIS YEAR CHAMBER IS SUPPORTING KEZIA'S FUND |
|
|
|
As Chamber members are aware we currently supporting Kezia's Fund.
Kezia's Fund was set up to support initiatives promoting good mental health amongst children and young people in Jersey. It provides grants and support to organisations that are working to address the issue of rising rates of poor mental health.
One of the primary fundraising events for this fund is Run for Kezia, an event which attracted 800 participants last year to run or walk over the choice of 3 distances (2k, 5k, 10k). The event is being held to coincide, again, with World Suicide Prevention Day on 15 September.
We would like to encourage all members to consider signing up (it is not competitive, timed and it is not necessary to run) and to encourage their families, friends and colleagues to sign up too: Kezia's Fund
Thank you |
