The Jersey Chamber Weekly Update

Dear Subscriber,

A few things happening in the last week then…
A really busy time the week before, that culminated with a Royal visit from Their Majesties on Monday. We showed the best of Jersey including four seasons in one day! I spent it on the balcony of the Royal Yacht hotel in the live streaming TV studio. It was a real honour to revert to the ‘other thing I do’ and host the afternoon.

Away from such glamour, a few concerns for Chamber. The Living Wage will have impacts, and certainly an unintended consequence of have the same Minimum/Living Wage for everyone is that those part time Saturday employees and those stepping out into the world of work experience might see their roles disappear. An amendment to employment law to ensure that younger employees are not discriminated against, will certainly have employers looking at the £13 minimum wage and wondering if they can pay that for new to work trainees and Saturday staff too. Chamber has made the Economic Advisor and Minister for the Sustainable Economy aware of the issue and await their thoughts, whilst we are also raising this with the Chief Minister and Social Security Minister. Will businesses reduce services, or will the option of part time and Saturday staff become a rarity? The is great concern among those in the outdoor activity sectors and that might make attractions and opening on Bank Holidays (at £26 per hour) unsustainable. The wider issue of recruiting from within and training the skills we require from school leavers and pay differential between staff pay scales will only be exacerbated. In discussion with the Chief Minister today, he has said that ‘As a Government, we are open to ideas and happy to work with Chamber of finding solutions to the concerns we have’.
Ona brighter note, I am reminded that in June 2019 Chamber led a delegation to Rennes to engage with the Rennes School of Business, the World Trade Centre, Rennes Airport and the Faculty des Metier. We (Jersey Business and Chamber) invited several Government officers along, to show them the potential. I made a speech to the French Chamber and several more meetings followed. Leap forward to this week and a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between Jersey and the Rennes School of Business. I’d like to think we had a hand in getting this ball rolling… incidentally this fabulous University campus only speaks and teaches in English, so the prospect of Jersey students studying in Rennes might move closer, as might our links with this expanding city of digital and tourism sectors with hi-speed train links to Paris.

A heads up.......We’re aware of fraudsters calling customers pretending to be from the bank.
They will try to get customers to give out their account details, such as card details, PIN codes and login details.
To keep safe please follow these steps:
* Never transfer any money at the request of an unexpected caller over the phone
* Don’t give anyone remote access to your computer
* Don’t download software on the instruction of others as this can be used by fraudsters
*If you are being pressured to act, hang up and contact your usual contact at the bank using a published/known number.
Sure you’re all aware of these actions – however never a bad thing to call them out.

image
As Chamber members are aware we currently supporting Kezia’s Fund.

Kezia’s Fund was set up to support initiatives promoting good mental health amongst children and young people in Jersey. It provides grants and support to organisations that are working to address the issue of rising rates of poor mental health.

One of the primary fundraising events for this fund is Run for Kezia, an event which attracted 800 participants last year to run or walk over the choice of 3 distances (2k, 5k, 10k). The event is being held to coincide, again, with World Suicide Prevention Day on 15 September.

We would like to encourage all members to consider signing up (it is not competitive, timed and it is not necessary to run) and to encourage their families, friends and colleagues to sign up too:

Thank you
