The Jersey Chamber Weekly Update
Dear Subscriber,
It would appear that straw polls can be a dangerous thing and may prick you rather sharply. Well, if you are the Senior Reporting Officer for a fiercely competitive tender process they can. This doesn't appear to be a 'ring-binder' moment (for those with long memories) as it was a conscious button press to read the survey results, which it now appears were visible without voting! We all blunder occasionally (I know I do) and only time will tell as to whether this faux pas will matter.
Is it of consequence that the successful ferry tender will be announced towards the end of October or early November, as stated by ITV news? Well, to a visitor economy reliant on booking from April onwards yes it certainly is. I hear future bookings are markedly lower than this time last year, and nobody needs our tourism industry to be the collateral damage for the ferry drama. Let's hope that by the time the officer recommendations are in, Ministers advised and Jersey and Guernsey agreeing for once, that the tourism ship is not already holed.
In a much more positive vein, LibertyBus can continue to be 'On the Buses' for the next 10 years. Congratulations to them. Perhaps the ferry tender will produce ultimate benefits like the bus tender has. With sharpened pencils, the already good bus service is set to improve, with the winner being the consumers.
I now have visions of Kevin Hart as Blakey at Liberty Station. If you are old enough to remember him, you'll probably qualify for a bus pass.

Looking ahead, the Esplanade has a whole pile of essential roadworks from 26 October to 3 November, so it would make sense to plan well and avoid frustrating delays.
Finally, some questions. Is our public money spent economically, efficiently and effectively? Do the controls and governance arrangements in place within our public bodies demonstrate value for money? The Comptroller and Auditor General reports on this and, as you might expect, plenty to say about it. Therefore, you might like to attend the next Chamber lunch with the C&AG, Lynne Pamment CBE on November 6th at the Radisson Blu.
Details about individual tickets and corporate tables are provided below. Don't hang about and miss out.
Enjoy the weekend

THIS YEAR CHAMBER IS SUPPORTING KEZIA'S FUND |
|
|
|
As Chamber members are aware we currently supporting Kezia's Fund.
Kezia's Fund was set up to support initiatives promoting good mental health amongst children and young people in Jersey. It provides grants and support to organisations that are working to address the issue of rising rates of poor mental health.
One of the primary fundraising events for this fund is Run for Kezia, an event which attracted 800 participants last year to run or walk over the choice of 3 distances (2k, 5k, 10k). The event is being held to coincide, again, with World Suicide Prevention Day on 15 September.
We would like to encourage all members to consider signing up (it is not competitive, timed and it is not necessary to run) and to encourage their families, friends and colleagues to sign up too: Kezia's Fund
Thank you |
