The Jersey Chamber Weekly Update
Dear Subscriber,
Hopefully we are not yet resigned to summer being over. The festive season goods start to appear along with the 2025 holiday adverts, we can all see time speeding along. Maybe we need an Indian Summer – why an Indian Summer? Give me 3 minutes.. it'll be April 1st before we know it! And another busy time looking at the steep change for many sectors as the New Minimum Wage shifts to £13 per hour on that date. Whilst there can now be little argument over a wage that better reflects the costs of living in Jersey, it is also true to say there will be impacts as a result. For many sectors they will have already stated the impact will not be direct to their business, in as much as they already pay above the wage point. There will however be some impact further up the payroll scales no doubt, where those closer to the NMW will expect to be paid more, and those above them will also expect some consistency in their pay gap. So, the cost of business will rise. This will come as no surprise to anyone including Government, who have clearly outlined that most businesses will need to put up prices of products they sell and services they provide. The Government also predict that it might mean some businesses will reduce the numbers they employ, reduce the hours they open, reduce the hours their employees work and cut into any profit margins. On the brighter side (or is it?), more employees will move into paying tax or more tax, more social security will get deducted and more GST will be taken on more expensive goods. The States Assembly has agreed on this course of action and it’s coming. Chamber has been concerned about the support measures the Government is putting in place to assist in that transition to £13 in April 2025 and then to an estimated £14+ in April 2026. Having set aside some £20m in support packages, the devil will be in the detail of where the funding goes and how accessible it will be. We know some will go in helping improve the productivity of businesses and some will go in helping Visit Jersey further entice an increase in visitors to enjoy a more expensive destination and herein lies some concerns for those providing tourists with venues, hospitality, hotel beds, local produce, retail outlets and activities. One area of consistent concern for Chamber has centred around 16–18-year-olds and their first jobs, weekend work and school holiday jobs. Will they get employment and those valued workplace life skills at the same rate as others at the NMW? We have called for a rate for full-time students and some form of reimbursement scheme for businesses putting the cost, time and effort into running apprenticeships. We must also recognise that we need to employ some individuals on work-permits to cover the variety of jobs and skills required on island. Each permit costs the business with a charge made in Jersey, so perhaps direct assistance on these costs could be looked at to help. The engagement, discussion and input into representing the businesses goes on. Do look out for a Chamber Survey focusing on Government procurement for local businesses in your inbox next week and if you have an opinion on whether a University in Jersey would be of benefit – or not, do come along to our breakfast briefing on Weds 25th September – the ticket details are below. Meanwhile, an Indian summer? Apparently based on the warm and hazy conditions in autumn when Native Americans hunted. In many parts of Europe it is known as 'Old woman's summer, 'Little Summer' in South America oh and with no reference to anything above, in Bulgaria it is translated as 'Poor man's summer's. Enjoy the weekend.

Jersey Sport, in collaboration with EY and Liberate, encourages everyone to GET INVOLVED and show support for PRIDE IN SPORT! |
Jersey Sport is proud to be working in collaboration with EY and Liberate again this September to celebrate PRIDE IN SPORT. The initiative throughout the month aims to raise awareness and tackle the issues of racism, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and sexism in sport. Racism, homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, sexism and other prejudicial language can all too often be dismissed as 'banter'. The words we use matter and make the difference between an inclusive space or one that feels exclusive and intimidating for people from minority groups. We're committed to creating an environment where everyone feels like they belong. It's only when people feel truly accepted, that they can perform at their best. During September, we're asking as many sports people as possible to show their support by wearing rainbow laces, sweatbands or headbands during their sporting activity and to share their photos across social media using the hashtag #PrideInSport. Wearing rainbow merchandise in support of PRIDE IN SPORT demonstrates a commitment to help make local sport an inclusive and discrimination-free space. Thanks to sponsors EY, sports organisations can collect their rainbow merchandise from Jersey Sport HQ, at the FB Fields, St Clement, from 09:00-16:00, Monday-Friday throughout September, whilst stocks last. Francis Malaspina, a Partner at EY in Jersey, said: "We are committed to fostering inclusivity across all spheres, including the workplace, homes, and communities. Sport unites us, and we believe that high performance is achieved when people can be their authentic selves. We are proud to continue supporting Pride in Sport and hope to encourage sports teams and events to promote awareness and inclusivity for the LGBTQIA+ community.” In support of PRIDE IN SPORT, Jersey Sport will be holding a FREE Lunch and Learn session, in partnership with Liberate, to assist local sports volunteers to promote diversity, inclusion and equality within their sport settings and encourage positive change. This informal workshop will be held on 17 September from 12:10-12:50 at Jersey Library and can be booked by visiting the Jersey Sport website: https://jerseysport.je/workshop-calendar/pride-in-sport-lunch-learn-with-liberate-jersey Sports organisations can also find a wealth of resources surrounding inclusive sport and how an inclusive and welcoming environment can be created for all members, at all levels, in the Jersey Sport online RESOURCE BANK: https://jerseysport.je/structure-and-decision-making/#standard-4 Libby Barnett, Sports Programmes Manager at Jersey Sport said: “So many people know and celebrate the many benefits that sport brings to our community, but some islanders who identify as LGBTQIA+ feel there are barriers preventing them from enjoying these settings as much as others. PRIDE IN SPORT is an opportunity to highlight sport's power and ability to welcome all islanders to get involved and play sport in safe and inclusive spaces. Jersey Sport is proud to be promoting these key messages every day, but particularly throughout the month of September to celebrate PRIDE IN SPORT, along with the many local sport organisations who hold the same values.” |

THIS YEAR CHAMBER IS SUPPORTING KEZIA'S FUND |
As Chamber members are aware we currently supporting Kezia's Fund.
Kezia's Fund was set up to support initiatives promoting good mental health amongst children and young people in Jersey. It provides grants and support to organisations that are working to address the issue of rising rates of poor mental health.
One of the primary fundraising events for this fund is Run for Kezia, an event which attracted 800 participants last year to run or walk over the choice of 3 distances (2k, 5k, 10k). The event is being held to coincide, again, with World Suicide Prevention Day on 15 September.
We would like to encourage all members to consider signing up (it is not competitive, timed and it is not necessary to run) and to encourage their families, friends and colleagues to sign up too: Kezia's Fund
Thank you |
