The Jersey Chamber Weekly Update
Dear Subscriber,
As we head into the getaway/staycation/crazy hazy days of summer that we wait all year for, Chamber has been planning a few changes with a new Website on the way... clearly, as with such things the work and changes behind the scenes will always feel greater to us, than the impact you might notice. Huge credit to Florinela in our office for the great work and the Glue Up team for making it so. Our newsletter, event ticketing, website and all of our engagement with you, will come directly from the new website, rather than be derived from four separate platforms - as I said the behind the scenes stuff is a big deal for us. So, better for us and we think better for you too in terms of engagement and your ability to manage changes to you entries on our website. You even get the option to have an App on your phone to book tickets and update your listings. It'll all launch next week.
So, that is on the way and minded that you - and our newsletter - will get a massive spike in Out-of-Office notifications, the newsletter will return in September and take a break for August.
Which reminds me, thank you to our newsletter sponsor Propelfwd for the last six months. If you would like to see your business at the top and bottom of this newsletter heading into thousands of inboxes every week from September onwards, do email us at admin@jerseychamber.com - we'd be delighted to talk you through the benefits and free lunch tables you'll get!
It's been a testing time for banking scams and so a timely reminder of what to do and not do. More details below. I should say, even the Chamber office had a scamming call this week. Fortunately, the team were prepared and dealt with it quickly. Some have not been so lucky and we send then our thoughts at the tough time of having to unpack the impacts of being scammed and the long road back to recovering losses - if they can.
If you need to catch up in the Moneyval Report or the latest RPI figures, the links are in the Government news section.
Finally, talking about your money, a reminder before you run out of the door, the next Chamber Lunch is on Thursday 26th September with the Minster of Treasury and Resources as our speaker - booking details are below. |

Warning: Increased Banking Scams and Phishing Attempts Targeting Jersey Businesses The Jersey Chamber of Commerce wishes to alert all businesses in Jersey to an alarming increase in banking scams and phishing attempts, as reported by Jersey Police and local banks. These fraudulent activities pose significant risks to the security and financial stability of our business community. Nature of Threats: Recent reports indicate that cybercriminals are employing sophisticated tactics to deceive businesses into divulging sensitive information or making unauthorised financial transactions. These scams often appear as legitimate communications from trusted financial institutions or known business contacts. Common Scam Techniques:
- Phishing Emails: Fraudulent emails designed to look like they are from a trusted source, requesting personal or financial information.
- Phone Scams: Calls from individuals posing as bank representatives or business partners, seeking confidential information or immediate payments.
- Invoice Fraud: Fake invoices or payment requests that appear to be from legitimate suppliers or service providers.
Protective Measures: To safeguard your business against these threats, we recommend the following actions:
- Verify Authenticity: Always confirm the identity of the sender or caller through official channels before responding to any requests for information or payments. End the call and call your bank.
- Avoid giving any information: Do not give banking information over the phone or filling out information via links provided that pretend to be official banking sites.
- Educate Employees: Ensure that all staff members are aware of these scams and trained to recognise suspicious activities.
- Implement Security Protocols: Use multi-factor authentication, regularly update passwords, and install reliable security software to protect your systems.
- Report Suspicious Activity: Immediately report any suspected scams to Jersey Police and inform your bank.
Stay Informed: Keep abreast of the latest advisories from Jersey Police and from your local bank. Regular updates and resources are available to help you stay vigilant and protected against these evolving threats. In a statement, the States of Jersey Police said: “We have been made aware of another scam targeting local businesses and, in the last week, just under £1 million has been lost to this scam. The scammer claims there is a problem with the company’s bank account, and asks a member of staff to log in to their online banking. The police explained that the fraudster then tells the staff member that they are on the wrong screen, instructing them to open a new tab and enter a different website address. This web address is fake and enables the scammer to gain control of the company’s bank account and transfer funds out of it.” They added: “Please be vigilant and never act on any request or give anyone remote access to your device. A bank will never ask a customer to download anything or ask them to log in to any specific websites. If a customer is unsure or wants to double-check, they should terminate the call and contact their bank on their published number on a separate phone.”
Anyone who thinks they may have been targeted by fraudsters, or fallen victim to a scam, is urged to report it to the States of Jersey Police on 612612. The Jersey Chamber of Commerce CEO Murray Norton: “This is a very real challenge for the business community and in a busy working environment, it is so easy to think the call is genuine. By remaining vigilant and proactive, we can collectively mitigate the risks posed by these fraudulent activities. We are very saddened and concerned for those who have already been scammed out of large sums of money” For further assistance or to report a scam, please contact Jersey Police or your bank directly. Stay safe and secure. Jersey Chamber of Commerce |

Lisa Paul, Headteacher at Mont Nicolle School, expressed her gratitude, saying, "We really appreciate Grant Thornton’s donation. Even the boxes used for the laptop presentation were reused. ITHSCI said, "This highlights our commitment to sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint." They also added, "We are pleased to have been involved in this initiative and thank the team at Grant Thornton for the opportunity to help make a difference in the community.’’ Adam Budworth, Managing Director at Grant Thornton added, "We are delighted to put something back into the community by donating these laptops to local schools, so children in the island can learn and benefit from enhanced IT resources." Looking ahead, Grant Thornton plans to continue this effort by recycling 20% of their laptops annually and continuing to donate them to places in Jersey where they can help make a real difference. |

Jersey Sport welcome David Kennedy as new Chief Executive Officer to drive sport and physical activity forward in the island |
|
|
|
Jersey Sport is delighted to welcome David Kennedy as their new Chief Executive Officer. David has worked in sports development most of his adult life, experiencing all the challenges, excitement, and rewards that make sport such an integral part of island life. He is excited about leading the organisation on their mission to inspire, lead, and enable positive wellbeing for all through lifelong engagement with sport and physical activity.
In his last four years as CEO of the Jersey Football Association, David has seen first-hand the many and varied challenges that sports continue to face. An immediate priority in his role as CEO will be to ensure that Jersey Sport can provide support at this very challenging time, although understanding that level of support will differ across the island’s huge spectrum of sports clubs. Increasing travel and facility costs, along with the continual challenge of recruiting volunteers, are forcing sports to make difficult decisions in what they can or want to achieve. Having recently launched the Jersey Sport Support In Sport Fund, a new Fundraising Strategy, and the soon to be launched Government Performance Sport initiative, an early priority as new CEO will be to ensure the benefits of these new funding opportunities are maximised. Jersey Sport also aims to further promote its charitable status and purposes with a particular focus on reducing the inequalities that exist in Jersey and ensuring that sport and physical activity is accessible to anyone. |

As Chamber members are aware we currently supporting Kezia’s Fund.
Kezia’s Fund was set up to support initiatives promoting good mental health amongst children and young people in Jersey. It provides grants and support to organisations that are working to address the issue of rising rates of poor mental health.
One of the primary fundraising events for this fund is Run for Kezia, an event which attracted 800 participants last year to run or walk over the choice of 3 distances (2k, 5k, 10k). The event is being held to coincide, again, with World Suicide Prevention Day on 15 September.
We would like to encourage all members to consider signing up (it is not competitive, timed and it is not necessary to run) and to encourage their families, friends and colleagues to sign up too: Kezia's Fund
