The Jersey Chamber Weekly Update

Dear Subscriber,

Boats, Budgets and Boks
'Look Boss de plane… de plane!'  With apologies to those that don't remember Fantasy Island, now the fog has cleared we might get sight of a ferry service past March.
Are we any clearer or closer to a ferry service – well yes… and no. Clearer as we have some clarity on the challenges faced by the Economic Development Minister in trying to clamber over the chaos and complications of the tender process.
All credit to him for providing that insight. I have to say the feeding frenzy of commentators and media sitting on the sidelines have probably played themselves to a standstill now.
So, perhaps a moment of calm in order for Government to crack on and choose.

It's budget time in Jersey and the States sitting is usually the longest one of the year. States members will sit on Monday 25th November to clear public business and facilitate Question Time. Starting on Tuesday 26th November (with the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday blocked off in case they need it), States members will address the budget and the thirty odd amendments, and often amendments to amendments and surprisingly sometimes the amendments to the amendments of the amendments will keep the Bailiff on his toes in reminding the States Members what they are voting for. All will be viewable online and will be a marathon watch or listen.
The big details are

Finally, watching the Boks destroy all in front of them in the rugby autumn series does have me and others reflecting on what we do well and what we could enhance. Sports tourism is a thing, and something for which we have the right venue, environment and facilities to provide real growth and a positive reputation. And hurrah huzzah to those who have fought hard to make it so. As has been pointed out this week though, it's not just for giant Boks but the bog-standard bods too – and their supporters.
We have plenty to market and plenty more we could offer with the right investment and facilities.

Fantasy Island Mr Roarke? Perhaps it could be Reality Island.

Ring the bell Tattoo, it's time for the weekend!

Procurement Survey Results
Procurement Survey Results
This report presents the findings of a survey conducted by the Chamber of Commerce to assess the current state of the Government of Jersey's procurement process. The survey aimed to gather feedback from local businesses to identify areas for improvement and enhance the overall efficiency and support provided to the business community.
The Chamber of Commerce has shared these findings with the Government of Jersey and will continue to engage with government officials to advocate for the implementation of the recommended improvements. By understanding the challenges and frustrations faced by businesses, we can work towards a more streamlined and transparent procurement process that benefits both the government and the local economy.

Fake £20 Notes Circulating in Jersey
Fake £20 Notes Circulating in Jersey
Jersey Police are warning local businesses to be vigilant after a number of fake £20 notes have been discovered circulating in the island.
The counterfeit notes, bearing the serial numbers CD74675145 and CD74888888, have been used at various establishments, primarily pubs and supermarkets. Some of the notes have also been found with the phrase "Prop Money" obscured by a label.
The police are urging businesses to carefully examine any £20 notes they receive and to report any suspicious activity to the States of Jersey Police. The community policing team will also be visiting local businesses to raise awareness of the issue.
If you have any information about the circulation of these counterfeit notes, please contact the States of Jersey Police.

THIS YEAR CHAMBER IS SUPPORTING KEZIA'S FUND
image
As Chamber members are aware we currently supporting Kezia's Fund.

Kezia's Fund was set up to support initiatives promoting good mental health amongst children and young people in Jersey. It provides grants and support to organisations that are working to address the issue of rising rates of poor mental health.

One of the primary fundraising events for this fund is Run for Kezia, an event which attracted 800 participants last year to run or walk over the choice of 3 distances (2k, 5k, 10k). The event is being held to coincide, again, with World Suicide Prevention Day on 15 September.

We would like to encourage all members to consider signing up (it is not competitive, timed and it is not necessary to run) and to encourage their families, friends and colleagues to sign up too:

Thank you
