The Jersey Chamber Weekly Update
Dear Subscriber,
I've been thinking for a very long time on writing about procrastination.
There has been a plethora of 'New Year – New You' offers of advice and assistance - I've noticed a fair few on planning, organising, visualising, list writing, reevaluating, rejuvenating and reflecting. Combined with Dry January and a diet, you really are spoiling yourselves aren't you!
At the same time, after the lull on the last week before Christmas, apart from those in retail and hospitality, the out of office signs appeared early and hung around until this past Monday. For many, as we waddled through this week, we may well feel we have just survived the shock-treatment of work.
The trouble is, if we think about it and talk about it and reexamine it with some sprinkles of consulting someone about it… ''it'' either takes forever or ''t'' never happens at all because it is no longer relevant, or you've started talking about ''something else''. In our efforts to cover all angles and be as self-aware as we can be, we can be self-absorbed rather than grasping the moment and talking about ''it'' some more.
It's about time you see.
I once cheered up a Breakfast Club by stressing how much I enjoyed a Saturday, and I said that if I lived to an average age, from that point in time, I would have 1000 left. I was of course rightly ridiculed, and I never went back again. The point is, we spend too much time on too many things that make too little difference and there is not enough time as it is.
I feel I should have said Happy New Year a little earlier… perhaps I've ruined that now!
Anyway, as I sit in my comfortable stretchy, post-Christmas, hardly used for sport, 'sports' top, I'm reminded of the logo on it. Just do it! And that 37-year-old phrase is the just get on with it motivation that might be needed in some quarters. Whether in the States Assembly, planning a new hospital, a ferry service or even looking into a sink hole, time is of the essence and procrastination in search of the perfect plan is not its friend. If we don't get on with it, we'll never get to the big stuff that really matters.
Talking of which; What is the biggest policy call for Jersey? We can find out at the January Lunch on the 23rd which is now sold out. So… perhaps getting on with securing tickets earlier is the answer, the February and March tickets are selling fast and the details are below.
Enjoy the weekend, as will I,
